ROYAL MILITARY CANAL

Hythe & Sandgate

Running for 28 miles between Seabrook and Hastings, this unique military defence was built between 1804-1809 as protection against an anticipated Napoleonic invasion.

Separating the town from the sea, the Hythe stretch runs through tranquil parkland – and you can take an electric boat trip or rent a rowing boat to get up close and personal with the ducks and other wildlife as well as the gorgeous waterlilies and other planting.

An easily accessible footpath runs the entire length of the canal, with a cycle path in places. If you’re on foot, there are historical information boards along the way.
